In September, I joined Ruth Marten (see the last photo), my dear friend from our days at the Boston Museum school, at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum for its historic Giacometti retrospective.
As almost everything in the exhibition was on loan from the Foundation Giacometti in Paris, these works had never been seen before in the US.
Giacometti was the most expressionist of late 20th-century sculptors, and the ablest at capturing in portraiture the existential conundrum of post-war humanity. The late works, in particular, are a marvel of tension, complexity and simplicity.
The exhibition is currently shown in Guggenheim in Bilbao.
